Parimarjan Negi wins Politiken Cup


Parimarjan beat ninth-seeded Berg in 28 moves

Sethuraman finishes ninth


NEW DELHI: In a sensational finish, 16-year-old Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi won the Politiken Cup chess title at Copenhagen on Sunday.

Starting the 10th and final round in joint second place with three others, including teammate S.P. Sethuraman, 12th seeded Parimarjan destroyed ninth-seeded Swede Emannuel Berg in just 28 moves on the second board before Israel’s Boris Avrukh inflicted a surprise 36-move defeat on overnight leader Russia’s Vladimir Malakhov.

As a result, Parimarjan and Avrukh, seeded seven, tied for the title with 8.5 points. Parimarjan was declared the winner due to superior tiebreak score. Malakhov took the third spot after heading a four-player tie at eight points.

In the penultimate round on Saturday, Parimarjan drew in just 10 moves with Malakhov before Sethuraman stunned Russian GM Alexei Dreev in 38 moves. However, in the final round, second seed Peter Heine Nielsen (Denmark) stopped Sethuraman in 26 moves. Sethuraman settled for the ninth place.
