August 31 deadline for repayment of farm loans

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on Monday announced that the government had decided to extend the deadline for repayment of crop loans and payment of crop insurance premium from July 31 to August 31 keeping in view the plight of farmers in the State.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Reddy said the decision was taken following repeated representations from farmers who were facing the brunt of the adverse seasonal conditions. He said the government was writing to the insurance companies to extend the date for payment of premium.

The Minister said the State government was writing to the Centre seeking its clearance so that banks and insurance companies would extend the deadline as sought by the State government.

Asked about the contingency plan, he said it was already put to effect. Consequently, 20,000 quintals of alternative seed, including castor, maize and sunflower, was being despatched to Mahabubnagar, Medak and Nalgonda from Monday. Depending on the rain, they would wait and watch, and if there was no rain in the districts till August 15, 1 lakh more quintals of seed would be despatched, he said.

On the results of the cloud-seeding operations, Mr. Reddy said that of the scheduled five days, they had lost three days due to problems that included aircraft problem and the absence of rain-bearing clouds. Effectively, the aircraft had done sorties on only two days and he was yet to receive the report, he said.
