JAC plans rally in Chennai

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The Joint Action Council of College Teachers (JAC) observed a fast on Saturday in Chennai, Vellore, Cuddalore, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Madurai and Tirunelveli to protest against the delay on the part of the Government in implementing the revised University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales.

Inordinate delay

According to a release from the council’s secretary S. Pannirselvam, there has been an “inordinate delay” that has affected the college and university teachers.

The JAC, comprising the Association of University Teachers, the Madurai Kamaraj and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Teachers’ Association and the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association, organised the fast which was attended by college and university teachers.

Pay scale

Mr. Pannirselvam had pointed out that the UGC and the Government of India had issued an order on December 31, 2008 revising the pay scale of university and college teachers and the same had been communicated to the State Government for implementation.

‘Disheartening’

“It is disheartening to note that while other sections of Government employees have got their pay revised, the only section left out is the teachers,” he added. In spite of the council making representations to the Government many a time, there had been no response. If the Government failed to respond to the fast on Saturday, the council would organise a rally in Chennai on August 13 where teachers from all over the State are expected to participate.
