2.5-kg liver tumour removed

Staff Correspondent

Manipal: Paediatric surgeons at Kasturba Hospital succeeded in removing a 2.5-kg tumour from the liver of a 14-year-old girl, according to a press release issued here on Monday.

Kalpana, (name changed) was diagnosed to have developed a huge tumour in the right lobe of her liver by a healthcare centre in Goa. Told by the surgeons that no facilities were available there for removing such a huge tumour from the liver of a minor girl, Ms. Kalpana approached Kasturba Hospital.

The 10-hour surgery was done by a team led by Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery Vijay Kumar. The team included Santosh Prabhu, P.T. Sundeep, and Zeeshan. It was supported by the Aneasthesia team of Elsa Varghese and Sathyajith. Although a unique organ because of its ability to regenerate, human liver is actually quite delicate, according to experts. “It requires a lot of exposure to complicated cases to perform a surgery of this kind and duration,” said Dr. Kumar. The patient would fully recover from the surgery in about two months. Later on, she would be able to lead a normal life because of the unique property of liver to regenerate by itself, Dr. Kumar said.
