Panel to look into Ugrappa’s charge

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Legislative Council on Monday referred the issue of the State intelligence wing allegedly collecting information on Leader of the Opposition V.S. Ugrappa from his native place, to the Privileges Committee.

Council Deputy Chairman Puttanna announced this after Mr. Ugrappa raised the issue and demanded that he should be allowed to move a privilege motion.

Earlier, Mr. Ugrappa alleged that two police constables from the intelligence wing had visited his native village, Venkatapura in Pavagada taluk, on July 18 and spoken to his mother, close relatives, and friends to elicit information on various issues, including his property and annual income. Mr. Ugrappa alleged that the police had threatened those refusing to divulge information, and had left their mobile phone numbers with them for forwarding additional information.

They told the people that such information had also been collected from Mr. Ugrappa. Denying the allegations, Home Minister V.S. Acharya said the Government had not ordered the collection of information.
