Popularisation of Tamil literary works hailed

Three-day 34th annual celebrations of Kamban Kazhagam conclude

PUDUKOTTAI: Honouring Tamil scholars, poets’ symposium, ‘pattimanram’ etc., marked the three-day 34th annual celebrations of the Kamban Kazhagam here, which concluded on Sunday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaikko presided over the inaugural and honoured the president of the Kamban Kazhagam, Rajapalayam, M.A. Subramaniaraja, with ‘Kamban Mamani’ award for his yeoman service in popularising Tamil works, particularly the ‘Kamba Ramayanam.’

He also presented ‘Kamban Pani Vallal’ awards to former Kuzhipirai panchayat president, Y.S.T.L. Chidambaram Chettiar and S.R.S. Rathinasamy Nadar, who were rendering an active support for the the Kamban Kazhagam.

Dr. Ponnavaikko hailed initiatives taken by the Kamban Kazhagam to popularise Tamil literary works among the common people.

Noted Tamil scholar, Suki Sivam, delivered a special lecture on ‘Kamban Kattum Kadavul’ at the inaugural.

The president of the Kamban Kazhagam, R. Ramayya, said that the kazhagam formed in 1975 has over 500 active literary enthusiasts of the district as its life members.

He said the kazhagam had so far honoured 18 Tamil scholars with the ‘Kamban Mamani’ award. To popularise the epic among students, the kazhagam conducted competitions for the students from LKG to college. The highlight of the second day’s programme was Magalir Suzhalum Sollarangam. The Chairperson of the Pudukottai Municipality Ramathilagam Udaiyappan presided over the programme, and N. Vijayasundari of Tiruchi was the moderator.

‘Who bore the brunt of the sufferings ? – Kannagi or Seetha or Panjali’ was the topic of the sollarangam. While Revathi Ganesh of Chennai spoke favouring Kannagi, Bharathibabu of Pudukottai supported Seetha and Kavitha Jawahar of Rajapalayam spoke for Panjali.

The poets’ session was presided over by R. M. V. Kadiresan, Correspondent of the Venkateswara Polytechnic College and Poet Ilanthevan led a group of half a dozen poets who rendered their poems on the topic ‘Raman Thottavaigalil Yennai Thottathu’.

Saraswathi Ramanathan, Tamil Professor, was the moderator for the pattimanram. The Chairman of the Senthooran Educational Institutions, Rama Vairavan presided over the valediction.

The correspondent of the Kuthoos Educational Institutions, Mohamed Ali, correspondent of the St. Joseph Educational Institutions, G. Antonysamy, Secretary, Kamban Kazhagam, R. Sampath Kumar, its vice-president, C. Ramachandran and others offered felicitations.
