Villages on Wikipedia

Sruthi Krishnan

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu could become the first State in the country to have information about all its villages on Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia. On Monday, IT Secretary P.W.C. Davidar and Kiruba Shankar, co-founder of Knowledge Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, talked about a project to include information on villages in Tamil Nadu on to Wikipedia. People who have moved out from their villages would like to see what is happening there, said Mr. Davidar, adding that the State wanted to be a pioneer in providing information through Wikipedia. As Wikipedia was an open resource, it would be useful to many, he said.

While there was information on every street in Manhattan in New York on Wikipedia, there was little about Indian villages, said Mr. Kiruba Shankar. Volunteers could contribute details about their villages, he said. If information on all villages in Tamil Nadu could be included on Wikipedia, it could be followed as a model for other States, he said.
