People urged to make optimum use of afforestation scheme

Udhagamandalam: Arrangements are apace for implementing a Tree Cultivation on Private Lands programme, according to the District Forest Officer (in-charge), the Nilgiris South, N.Satheesh.

Good response

In a press note issued here on Tuesday, he said that the scheme introduced during 2007-08 had evoked good response.

Tamil Nadu was the first to implement such a scheme.

So far in the Nilgiris South Division, 50,000 saplings had been planted on 312.40 acres and 196 persons had benefited.

Subsidy

A sum of Rs. 3,12,500 had been distributed by way of subsidy for nurturing the saplings.

In the North division, 1.25 lakh saplings had been planted on 781.25 acres and 457 persons had benefited.

A sum of Rs. 7,80,821 had been distributed as maintenance subsidy.

Mr. Satheesh said that during the current fiscal it was proposed to distribute 75,000 saplings in the South division and one lakh in the North division.

At the rate of 200 per acre, 500 saplings would be given to each farmer.

Maintenance subsidy would be given at the rate of Rs.5 per sapling.

Those interested should contact the range officer concerned with applications containing details pertaining to their lands.

Pollution-free

Urging the people to make the optimum use of the programme, Mr.Satheesh pointed out that growing trees would help protect the environment and keep the surroundings pollution-free.

The objective was to ensure that one-third of the land was brought under forests, he added.
