NAMAKKAL: The district administration has closed down 138 dyeing units, which were found functioning without proper approval from the government, Collector U. Sagayam has said. A team of officials from various departments along with police personnel conducted raids in Komarapalayam and Pallipalayam areas following widespread complaints from the public that unauthorised dyeing units were discharging effluents into the Cauvery River, the Collector told journalists here on Tuesday. The team also inspected 100 units which were given approval by the government. Officials found 12 units, which did not ensure proper maintenance as per the rules, and sent showcause notices to the owners of those units. The administration also formed a team comprising officials from the revenue department and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to monitor the dyeing units functioning in the district. Stern action would be taken against industrial establishments if they were found causing pollution in any form, the Collector warned. Mr. Sagayam said that the administration had launched a detailed investigation into the allegations that a few persons had registered their names for government employment with the District Employment Office (DEO) by giving bogus certificates that they had given their lands for government programmes. The persons had given these bogus certificates to get priority during the government recruitment. A few persons had given certificates that they had given their lands for government programmes in other districts and registered with the Namakkal DEO. The police had already arrested a person in this connection, Murugesan, and stern action would be initiated if the persons had submitted bogus certificates, he said.
