Quick work: Storm-water drain near Old Punjab and Sindh Bank in Bidar being reconstructed using ‘magic boxes’, on Tuesday. Bidar: The officials of the Nirmithi Kendra and the Public Works Department, under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, took up the work on the reconstruction of storm-water drain near Old Punjab and Sindh Bank on the Udgir Main Road of Bidar city on Tuesday. Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) pre-cast elements that are generally referred to as “magic boxes”, will be used to reconstruct the storm-water drain. According to official sources, the “magic boxes” would be fixed and the work on the drain will be completed within 24 hours. However, the work on excavation began a few days back and preliminary work to fix the “magic boxes” was completed on Monday night. As the work is expected to be completed in a span of 24 hours, vehicular movement on the Udgir Main Road connecting Hyderabad will not be affected, the sources said. The pre-cast elements measure 3m x 3m in dimension and one metre in length and are wedged together by steel rods. The “magic boxes” were designed by the officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP), Bangalore and the designs have been emulated by the Nirmithi Kendra in Bidar. In Bangalore, the “magic boxes” have been used to construct underpasses so as to facilitate free flow of traffic on roads. Sources said that the “magic boxes” are big enough for mini earth movers to go inside and take up work of clearing the drain if necessary. However, there were remote chances of drains choking up if they are constructed using “magic boxes”, they added Mr. Harsh Gupta accompanied by officials of Additional Central Assistance (ACA) Project and the Nirmithi Kendra inspected the works.
