Tumkur seer opposes Bellary airport project

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Sri Nanjavdhoot Swami of Tumkur has said that for the welfare of a few the Government should not spoil the lives of thousands.

Speaking with reference to the controversy over the proposed airport here, he said he was with the farmers of Chaganur and Siriwar villages in their efforts to preserve their land.

‘Unfortunate’

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he expressed concern over the Government’s failure to respond to the issue. “The Government should have responded positively, especially after the farmers protested time and again. It is painful to see them begging for what is actually their own. Such insensitivity is unfortunate,” he said. Coming out strongly against “mindless” land acquisition, he sought to know what the State planned to do to increase food production. “We can’t eat computers or goods produced by industries. Priority should be given to food production. The move to acquire fertile land for the airport should be dropped,” he said. The swami appealed to the State Government to constitute a committee to study the pros and cons of the project before taking a final decision.

He offered to meet Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in this regard if the latter wished to take things forward. He also underlined the need for the Union Government to intervene in the matter.
