Minister clarifies that Gorur dam is safe
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday made it clear in the Legislative Council that Monday’s mild tremors near the Gorur reservoir area of Hassan district had not affected the dam’s safety.
Replying to Bharatiya Janata Party member Doddarange Gowda, the Minister said the officials concerned had examined the safety issue. They had concluded that there was no threat to the dam’s safety.
Mr. Bommai said the area near Gorur dam in the Cauvery basin had experienced tremors measuring 2.2 to 2.4 on the Richter scale on Monday evening. Earlier, Mr. Gowda requested the Minister to send a team of seismologists to Gurur dam to ascertain its safety.
Krishna Tribunal
Meanwhile, replying to Congress member S.R. Patil, the Minister said Karnataka would draw the attention of Krishna Water Disputes’ Tribunal-II on the alleged efforts by Andhra Pradesh to illegally take up a lift irrigation project on the Krishna in Sangam Banda village of Andhra Pradesh, which is about four km from the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh boundary.
The Minister endorsed the views of Mr. Patil and said that such a project would not only submerge several villages in Gulbarga district, but would also come in the way of equitable sharing of Krishna waters among the riparian states.
