VISAKHAPATNAM: Overall it has been a satisfying tenure, though there were some ups and downs, the outgoing Superintendent of Police Akun Sabharwal said about the two years he worked here. Dr. Sabharwal, who has been transferred as Joint Director of ACB at Hyderabad, on Tuesday handed over charge to Vineet Brij Lal, who has been transferred from Kurnool. Incidentally both are of the 2001 IPS batch and roommates during training period. Since taking charge as SP in June 2007, Dr. Sabharwal has been able to gain control over the CPI (Maoist) and effected surrender of 118 cadres. Apart from the Balimela incident, which occurred in Orissa very near to Andhra border, his tenure here had not seen much damage to the police. Training programmes for youth, free distribution of books and sports material to the students and youth helped the police to get support from the tribals. There were 15 exchanges of fire and a total of 14 Maoists had been killed. Dr. Sabharwal pointed out that the presence of Maoists in the district and the number of violence incidents they had created had come down. There was more violence in Orissa side of the border. Polling during the May general elections passed off peacefully and it was for the first time that re-polling had not necessitated in the district including the Agency area. As soon as the launch carrying Greyhounds and others was sunk in Balimela reservoir by the police, Dr. Sabharwal rushed to the spot and personally supervised and participated in the retrieval operation.
