HYDERABAD: Power generation began at Srisailam dam on Monday night after the water-level in the reservoir touched 840 ft mark against the minimum draw-down level (800 ft) prescribed for power generation. The storage in the reservoir has gone up to 97 tmcft as against its full capacity of 263 tmcft. It is expected to go up further as the current inflow of 1.63 lakhs cusecs is likely to continue for a day or two. The government decided to start generating power after assessing the irrigation requirements of Nagarjunasagar ayacut for kharif and the inflows expected further, said G. Adiseshu, Director (Hydel), AP Genco. To begin with, six out of the seven units of the right bank hydel power station of the dam were put into service, each of 110 MW capacity. These units will generate nearly 15 million units a day and provide the much needed relief to AP Transco. The government had closed both the right and left bank power houses Srisailam, which account for combined capacity of 1,670 MW during summer to preserve water in the reservoir for use for crops and other purposes in the event of monsoon failure. As a result of power generation at Srisailam, about 30,000 cusecs of water is likely to reach Nagarjunasagar, This brightens the prospects of release of water into Nagarjunasagar right and left bank canals which serve an ayacut of about 30 lakh acres for the kharif crop.
