Over 100 quintals of certified seeds will be distributed to farmers

Assistances worth Rs. 45,000 will be extended to introduce Integrated Pest Management

Fourteen numbers of knapsack sprayers will be distributed at subsidised costs

Tirupur: To enhance the food grain production to meet the growing demand, the Department of Agriculture plans to increase the area coverage and productivity of pulses in Tirupur block at an estimated outlay of Rs. 5.02 lakh this fiscal.

The project cost, earmarked under National Foods Security Mission (NFSM), will be utilised to subsidise the distribution of certified seeds of pulses like black gram, green gram, cowpea and Bengal gram, sprayers, power tiller and micro nutrients.

“We are aiming to increase the area coverage of pulses in the block by 15 per cent and yield by 20 per cent over the last fiscal by the end of this financial year,” Mohammed Kalimullah Sherif, Assistant Director of Agriculture, told The Hindu.

Under the scheme, 105 quintals of certified seeds will be distributed to the pulses farmers in the block for ensuring high yield.

“The certified seeds required for the project will be developed at various farms in the block from high quality breeder seeds that are to be obtained by the department from institutions like Tamil Nadu Agriculture University,” he said.

To improve soil health and thereby ensure good growth of plants, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices will be implemented over 80 hectares. This apart, assistances worth Rs 45,000 will be extended to introduce Integrated Pest Management over 60 hectares.

For effective spraying of pesticides, 14 numbers of knapsack sprayers will be distributed at subsidised costs.
