Manipur lawyers boycott courts

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Lawyers are boycotting courts all over Manipur to protest the stopping of construction of the High Court building by an underground organisation. The foundation was laid on April 30, 2006.

A spokesman of the All Manipur Bar Association and the Manipur High Court Bar Association said though Manipur became a State in 1972, a mere Bench of the Gauhati High Court was functioning here. In the absence of a full-fledged court, the Bench had accumulated a backlog of 10,000 cases. Only a separate court could help to clear it, he said, urging militants not to obstruct the work.

The boycott, which began on Tuesday, would continue till August 1, the spokesman said.
