CCTV cameras to be installed at university

MADURAI: Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are to be installed in all important sections of Madurai Kamaraj University, including the Directorate of Distance Education and offices of Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Controller of Examinations.

This move comes in the wake of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) police nabbing two university employees red-handed on Monday night when they took bribe from a student for issuing his mark sheet.

By installing the cameras, the varsity authorities hope to prevent incidents of bribery and corruption on the campus.

Also, with immediate effect, the university has appointed N. Muthu Mohan of Guru Nanak Studies Chair as the new Additional Controller of Examinations in the place of the incumbent woman official.

“When I broached the idea of having surveillance cameras some time back, there was resistance from members of a teachers’ association who said that it is encroaching into people’s privacy. But we have no other alternative,” R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

While a departmental enquiry into the incident is going on, the university administration has also decided to shuffle enmasse the staffers working in sensitive departments in the Directorate of Distance Education, such as the examination wing.
