Anti-ragging march held

Staff Reporter

Culinary academy wants to sensitise students on the issue

Social awareness: Students of a hotel management institute taking out an anti-ragging march on Tuesday.

HYDERABAD: Rows of long, white caps bobbed up and down, visible above the vehicles plying on the busy Begumpet road, as the chefs, their attire complete with apron and double breasted shirt, marched forward. Banners proclaimed the words, ‘say no to ragging’, as the students and faculty of the Culinary Academy of India led the anti-ragging march from Begumpet to Khairtabad here on Tuesday.

The protest was aimed as much at creating awareness in the public as it was at sensitising the marchers, most of whom were students.

“Tomorrow the new batch will arrive. So we are also trying to make our own students understand the seriousness of the issue”, said Attique Syed, faculty member.

The institute received a circular about anti-ragging measures from Osmania University, to which it is affiliated, but decided to do something more.

Though the institute has never had any incidents of ragging, the management is taking all the necessary precautions. “There is no guarantee that it won’t happen in professional institutes.

There was an incident a few years ago in Vidyanagar where a student of IHM was stabbed” he says, while referring to a case where a junior student had stabbed some of the seniors when they tried to rag him.
