Leela Naidu
MUMBAI: Yesteryear Hindi film actor Leela Naidu passed away here on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. She was 69.
Ms. Naidu starred in a number of Hindi films, besides Merchant Ivory Productions’ ‘The Householder.’
Ms. Naidu made her debut in 1960 with Balraj Sahni in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Anuradha.’ However, she achieved fame only after doing a non-orthodox role with Sunil Dutt in ‘Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke’ (1963). The film was based on the K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra case.
Born to an Irish mother and an Indian father, she was crowned Femina Miss India in 1954.
Vogue named her one of the 10 most beautiful women in the world.
Ms. Naidu married Bikki Oberoi, heir to the Oberoi chain of hotels, by whom she had twin daughters.
She divorced Mr. Oberoi and married poet and journalist Dom Moraes. Ms. Naidu stayed with Mr. Moraes in Hong Kong for about 10 years.
After a guest appearance in “The Guru” in 1969, she bid adieu to films.
In 1985, she made a comeback as a Goan matriarch in Shyam Benegal’s “Trikaal” and later featured in director Pradip Krishen’s 1992 movie “Electric Moon”. — Agencies
