This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru, inaugurating the Seventeenth International Scouts’ Conference in New Delhi on July 29, told an international gathering of world scouts and guides that as individuals and as a movement, they could play a definite part in the world by creating an atmosphere of fellowship, comradeship and understanding. He said that mere political understandings were of no value if they were not based on the real feelings of the mind and heart. “If we could perhaps do away with slogans and well-worn phrases, which come so aptly to the politicians, and try to ban their use for a while and deal with the problems minus the slogans and such phrases, I imagine it may be a little easier to deal with the problems”, he said. Mr. Nehru added, “In a changing world the phrases and slogans of yesterday, however good they were, may not be totally appropriate to-day and what may be appropriate to-day may not fit in to-morrow.”
