Staff Reporter

To ensure high level of food safety and quality control

The agreement also details on the

modalities of cooperation

The document also underlines increased responsibility of the EIC of India

KOCHI: India and the Russian Federation have reached a new administrative arrangement on shipping and export of fish and seafood products from India.

The aim was “to ensure high level of food safety and quality control for shipment of seafood products from India,” said a communication from the Marine Products Export Development Agency (MPEDA) here on Wednesday. It said that the new protocol was signed on Tuesday in Moscow between the Export Inspection Council of India (EIC) Federal Service of Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance of the Russian Federation (FSVPS).

The Indian team also included Director of the Ministry of Commerce Shiv Kumar, Joint Director of the EIC of India Anand Kishore and First Secretary of economics and commerce at the Indian embassy in Moscow Debajyoti Pal, the release said.

The new administrative arrangement will define the terms of export for more than 45 Indian fish processing establishments.

“The agreement also details on the modalities of cooperation in the fields of quarantine and inspections, during the export and import of products processed from wild catch and aquaculture,” the release said.

The new document also underlined the increased authority and responsibility of the EIC of India in administering the inspections and control system of India’s fish processing units and their recommendation and approvals for export to Russia.

The teams representing the two countries, while recognising the need for continued constructive dialogue on future seafood and fish product shipments from India, also reached an agreement on creating a bilateral working group on sea products safety, the communication added.
