New Delhi: Eight people were killed in rain-related incidents in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday that were lashed by heavy showers while rain eluded other parts of the northern region. South-west monsoon which had so far been “weak” in Punjab and Haryana turned “vigorous”, resulting in torrential rains. Six deaths in Uttar Pradesh took the toll to 24 in the State. While four persons were killed in Barabanki, one person each died in Hardoi and Maharajganj. The rainfall, which was 32 mm on an average, was a welcome break for the people of the State, especially the farmers. Two die in HoshiarpurHeavy downpour in Punjab, which claimed two lives in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on Tuesday evening, led to a drastic fall in temperature by up to nine degrees below normal. Chandigarh recorded a high of 26.4 degrees Celsius, down by seven degrees below normal while Ludhiana in Punjab registered a nine-degree fall in its maximum to settle at 26 degrees. In Haryana, Ambala was drenched by 85 mm rain and the maximum there dropped to 27.8, down by six notches. A day after widespread rains in Jammu and Kashmir, most parts of the border State recorded below normal temperatures. The maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar was near normal at 29.6 degrees while it was 32.3 in Jammu. Mercury rose marginally in Himachal Pradesh despite widespread rains across the hill state. Capital Shimla recorded day temperature of 21.1 degrees, a rise by a few notches. PTI
