Mobile alert system for medical check-up launched

Staff Reporter

The service will act as an “automated nurse in your cell phone”

CHENNAI: There is a market for a nagging alert system which reminds people about their regular medical check-up or to take their medication on time, said Narayanan Ram, CEO of PurpleTeal, a company which focuses on personalised health alerts.

He was speaking at the launch of the Mobile Medi Alert system in partnership with mobile phone retail chain UniverCell here on Wednesday. “Mobile phones are pervasive in India, people are always carrying them, and they are quite comfortable using SMS. They are also becoming much more health conscious, but their busy lives and work schedules makes it difficult for them to perform regular activities that improve their health – they need some hand-holding,” said Mr. Ram.

The service will act as an “automated nurse in your cell phone” giving alerts about preventive screenings based on age and gender, follow-up of diagnosed conditions and treatment, according to him. “The alerts would deliver personalised health messages and reminders to take timely and regular health actions on a day to day basis.”

Ramesh Barath, vice-president, UniverCell, said “We see this as a great opportunity to help people become more involved in the care of their ageing parents and young children with minimal effort.” To subscribe to the service, customers should approach the nearest UniverCell showroom. The service costs Rs.99 for six months.
