KOCHI: The mortal remains of actor Rajan P. Dev, who died here on Wednesday, were laid to rest at the St. Xavier’s church at Karukutty, near Angamaly, with State honours on Thursday. People from various walks of life thronged his residence, Rajakala, at Karukutty to attend the funeral. The police had a tough time controlling the crowd that started pouring in from Wednesday night onwards. Sebastian Edayanthrath, Auxiliary Bishop of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, led the funeral rites held at the actor’s residence. Education Minister M.A. Baby and Law Minister M. Vijayakumar offered tributes on behalf of the State government. The funeral procession carrying the body began at 11.20 a.m. from the residence of the actor. It took more than one hour for the procession to reach the church. Hundreds of people lined up on either side of the road leading to the church to pay homage to the actor. Jose Baby, Deputy Speaker; Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition; MLAs Jose Thettayil, K. Babu, Roshi Augustine, and P. B. Devasi; actors Suresh Gopi, Lalu Alex, Dileep, Madhupal, Shankar, Captain Raju, Mala Aravindan, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Bindu Panicker, Kochu Preman and Sphadikam George; music director M.K. Arjunan; and directors including Renji Panicker, Vinayan, and Thampi Kannanthanam, were among those who attended the funeral. Shops remained closed till noon at Karukutty, as a mark of respect to the actor. A condolence meeting was also held under the auspices of the Karukutty panchayat.
