Bonhomie melts down tension in A.P. Assembly

Special Correspondent

Speaker, Rosaiah and TDP member tender apologies

HYDERABAD: In a rare display of the spirit of forgiveness, Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K. Rosaiah and Telugu Desam member G. Muddukrishnama Naidu apologised to each other in the Assembly on Thursday in the backdrop of their slanging match which disrupted proceedings of the House for the last two days.

The tone for the truce was, however, set by Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy who himself tendered an apology to the TDP members for losing his cool on them on Wednesday. Setting aside the question hour at the commencement of the business, Mr. Reddy said he shouted at them to “sit” as he was irritated when his repeated pleas to them to resume their seats in the midst of the heat generated over the row between Mr. Rosaiah and Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu went unheeded. Mr. Reddy also said it was not his intention to hurt anyone. He was new to the Chair and should learn to control himself, he added.

Mr. Rosaiah followed suit by withdrawing his remark against Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu. He apologised to the TDP member who reciprocated the gesture.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Leader of Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu contributed to the cooling of tempers when both of them complimented the Speaker for his gesture. However, they came close to rubbing each other on the wrong side when Dr. Reddy remarked that Mr. Naidu had something of the past crossing his mind every time and the latter warned him not to provoke the TDP.

“Beauty of democracy”

The Speaker’s initiative was also lauded by various other parties. Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Akbaruddin Owaisi expressed surprise at the cordial atmosphere returning to the House so soon. The latter quipped “that is the beauty of democracy.”
