Mixed luck for Neeraj

Coimbatore: Fifth seed Neeraj Elangovan defeated top seed Shaikh Abdullah of Andhra Pradesh 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and entered the under-14 boys’ singles final in the L.C.C-Vidhya Niketan Super Series National ranking junior tennis tournament here on Thursday.

Neeraj made the best use of his big serves and strong baseline play to trouble his opponent for most part of the game. Abdullah did enjoy a 3-1 lead at the start but let slip the advantage to lose the first set 4-6.

The AP youngster fought back in a strong fashion to take the second 6-3. But, before any further damage could be done, Neeraj closed the doors on the top seed for a place in the final.

It wasn’t sweet, however, for Neeraj in the under-16 section. The 14-year-old from Chennai, who looked a bit jaded and tired, went down 6-0, 6-1 to State-mate and doubles partner Ramkumar.

Other results (semifinals):

Boys: U-14: .K. Pardhasaradhi (AP) bt Garvit Batra (Del) 6-3, 6-3.

U-16: Advaith Sadvalkar (Mah) bt Shaik Abdullah 6-4, 6-2.

Girls: U-14: Sai Samitha (TN) bt Roma Chandiran (TN) 6-2, 6-3; Swetha Hari (TN) bt D. Mahitha (AP) 6-4, 6-1.

U-16: K. Bhuvana (AP) bt Sanjana Manoj (TN) 7-5, 6-2; Sai Samitha bt Doondi Priya (AP) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
