KOCHI: With some of the top seniors missing, the spotlight will be on juniors in the seventh M.K. Joseph memorial Kerala State inter-club athletics championship which begins at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Friday. Long and triple jumper Mayookha Johny, who suffered a leg injury last season is yet to return to competition, while another jumper M.A. Prajusha is now in England on a training-cum-competition tour. Rising star Tintu Luka, C. Shilpa, the fastest girl at the recent Junior Federation Cup in Lucknow, Aswathi Mohanan — all from the Usha School of Athletics — Kothamangalam St. George School’s Binish K. Shaji, who won a silver in the World Schools Championship in Estonia recently, Palakkad Parali School’s V.S. Sandhya, M.D. Thara and Mar Athanasius College’s Mohammed Naseem and K.J. Clinton are some of the notable athletes who will figure in the three-day championship which opens the Kerala athletics season. Competitions for men and women and for boys and girls in the under-20, 18, 16 and under-14 sections will be conducted and nearly 1,500 athletes from 75 clubs and institutions will be seen in action. The medal winners will be given cash prizes (gold Rs 500, silver Rs 300, bronze Rs 200). The Kerala team for the South Zone junior championship, which will be held in Kochi from August 12 to 14, will be picked from this meet. Joseph V. Thomas, the patron of the Kerala State Athletics Association, will inaugurate the meet in the afternoon and Baby Mathew Somatheeram, the President of the State association, will preside over the opening function.
