Sowing gains momentum in Mysore district

Hard work: Farmers get busy with sowing operations in Mysore district.

Mysore: Agricultural activity in the district, including sowing operations, has gathered momentum thanks to copious rains and the release of water into the canals.

As against a target of sowing crops in 4,55,130 hectares of land during the kharif season, sowing operations are completed in 2,49,194 hectares while sowing will be done on the rest of the targeted area by August-end.

Statistics obtained from the office of the Joint Director of Agriculture here indicate that the farmers would be in a position to meet the target of completing the sowing activities within another 30 days while transplanting of germinating crops from nurseries is expected to commence from August 15.

The area under cereal will cover 2.05 lakh hectares and the current coverage area is 51,675 hectares as against 49,982 hectares brought under sowing during this period last year.

Similarly, pulses will be cultivated in 82,755 hectares, sowing operations have been completed in 47,400 hectares. Among the commercial crops, cotton is cultivated extensively in the region apart from tobacco and the authorities have chalked out a plan to bring 54,665 hectares of land under cultivation of which 41,495 acres has been covered till date. However, for the cultivation of tobacco crop, the target for the district was 75,065 hectares but the area brought under the crop is 82,770 acres. Meanwhile, the weather condition continued to be favourable for agriculture. Mysore district received 407 mm of rainfall till July 27.

The major reservoirs in the region were full due to the heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the Cauvery and the Kabini. The water-level at the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) was 124.40 feet as against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 124.80 feet.

The inflow was at the rate of 10,819 cusecs and the outflow was at the rate of 14,487 cusecs and the live storage in the reservoir was 40.515 tmcft.

The water-level at the Kabini reservoir was 2,283.40 feet as against the FRL of 2,284 feet and the inflow was at the rate of 10,325 cusecs while the outflow was at the rate of 8,550 cusecs and the live storage in the reservoir was 9.314 tmcft.

At Harangi, the reservoir level was 2,858.59 feet against the FRL of 2,859 feet and the inflow was at the rate of 2984 cusecs, the outflow was at the rate of 776 cusecs while the live storage was 7.611 tmcft.
