Wet spell: Within minutes of rain on Thursday evening, stretches of several roads went under sheets of water affecting traffic. A scene on Muthusamy Road in Broadway. CHENNAI: Evening showers on Thursday came as a much needed relief for the residents who experienced yet another hot day. The rain, however, resulted in several roads going under sheets of water within minutes and affecting traffic. While in several areas, including Chintadripet, Royapettah and Mylapore, the showers lasted for an hour, other localities, including Koyambedu, Otteri, Vysarpadi, Velachery, Vadapalani and Kilpauk, received only light showers. Motorists spent a long time as traffic piled up on many water-logged stretches of arterial roads such as Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Poonamallee High Road and Taramani Link Road during the evening rush hour. Nungambakkam registered a maximum temperature of 36.8 degree Celsius against the average temperature of 34 degree Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 degree Celsius. The light showers over the past few days have helped to bring down the day temperature. While the observatory in Nungambakkam recorded 3.2 mm of rainfall, the facility in Meenambakkam registered 32.2 mm of rainfall during the 12-hour period till 8.30 p.m. on Thursday. Meteorology Department officials said the showers were due to the thunderstorm activity. There is a possibility of light rain in some areas during evening or night on Friday and the maximum temperature would be around 37 degree Celsius.
