MADURAI: The primary health centre (PHC) at Tirupparankundram near here crossed an important milestone in maternal care on Friday by performing 100 deliveries in July. Nagalakshmi Devaraj of Avaniapuram, who underwent Caesarean section, delivered of a baby boy weighing 3.2 kg on Friday, marking the achievement. Both the woman and child are safe, according to Health Department officials. “For a PHC to achieve the 100-delivery mark in a single month is phenomenal. We congratulate the doctors and nurses of Tirupparankundram PHC for their feat,” A. Palanichamy, Deputy Director of Health Services, Madurai district, told The Hindu on Friday. Immediately after the PHC achieved a “century in deliveries” for July, medical officers and paramedical staff celebrated the feat after reporting details to Health Department officials. K. Bharathi, Block Medical Officer, said that the Tirupparankundram PHC performed 78 deliveries in June and 73 in May. According to officials, there is an urgent need for the PHC to get additional buildings to be able to meet the “increasing load, month after month.” Dr. Bharathi said that out of the 100 deliveries carried out this month, 90 were normal with the rest being Caesarean. “We appeal to the State Government to upgrade our PHC as an Additional PHC so that more funds would come,” she said. The officials here also expect an early release of an additional fund of Rs. 25 lakh from the Directorate of Public Health for constructing new buildings / operation theatre. Dr. Palanichamy said that the success of Tirupparankundram PHC was a pointer to the commitment of doctors and staff members of the PHCs in implementing the State Government’s call for improved maternal and child care to benefit the rural people. Another senior health official said that the target given for a block PHC was only 30 deliveries per month. But the Tirupparankundram PHC had performed 100 and so it was time to provide more facilities to meet the public demand.
