Bangalore: Had the multi-utility vehicle, in which the seven Madura Garments employees took their journey on Thursday evening, started on time, they would not have come into the path of the killer lorry. They started a bit late because they were excitedly planning what they would do for the Varamahalakshmi festival. On Friday, what should have been a festive atmosphere at their workplace, turned into a sombre occasion with their co-workers converging on the factory premises at Basavanpur Gate near Mayaganahalli on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway to mark their condolence. The management declared a holiday as a mark of respect for the dead. All the seven and their driver died near Seshagirihalli on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway when a Kozhikode-bound lorry laden with vegetables lost control when hit by a tipper, jumped the median and crashed into the MUV. Six died on the spot and two in hospital. The dead are driver Suresh, Kavitha and Geetha, Vijaykumar, Rajesh, Sandeep, Naresh and Ramanath. Sushma and Pushpa, co-workers of Kavitha, wept as they spoke about her. “The MUV left the factory premises a bit late than usual because people were discussing the festival preparations. Amongst the victims, four had taken leave on Friday and hence had boarded the vehicle late,” said Madesha, Sandeep’s friend. All eight bodies were handed over to relatives after post-mortem.
