Students from 18 government schools are participating Intermittent rain did not dampen their spirits
MATCH ON: Schoolchildren engaged in a kho-kho competition of the Hobli A-level games held in Mangalore on Friday. MANGALORE: About 300 students from various government schools in and around the city enthusiastically took part in the team events held in a playground near Parmanur Church at Thokkottu on Friday. They displayed their skills in kho-kho and throw-ball competitions on the wet ground. Cheering them onA few intermittent spells of rain seemed to have added to their spirits. Children were seen pitching the ball deliberately in small pools of water as they played. The courts were surrounded by groups of students who cheered their favourite players. The participants were keen on giving their best. “Last year my team had won. The result won’t be different this year,” said Shafiq (14), a kho-kho player from Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panhayat Higher Primary School, Bajal. The team was doing well because of the efforts of physical education teacher Renuka Kumari. Shafana, his schoolmate, said. ProblemAccording to officials conducting the games, 26 of the 18 schools had sent four teams each for the games. The rest of the schools did not have adequate number of students, according to sources. PromotionThe games are being held for the Hobli A-level cluster of schools located at Permanur, Bajal, Nanthoor, Ullal, and surrounding areas. The winning teams will participate in district-level games.
