Mettur dam inflow shrinks

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The flow into the Stanley reservoir in Mettur has come down considerably in the last two days, and it was just 7,700 cusecs on Friday, as against the release of 12,000 cusecs for samba cultivation in the delta districts. On Thursday, the inflow was 6,800 cusecs.

Though the storage at the Krishnaraja Sagar and the Kabini reservoirs was full, Karnataka had reduced the release substantially following a drop in inflow in the reservoirs. But, the situation improved on Friday when the reservoirs started receiving heavy inflow again.

While the KRS received 12,000 cusecs, realisation at the Kabini dam was 7,000 cusecs on Friday. As Karnataka could not hold any more water, it has started letting out the entire inflow in the river. It is hoped that the Stanley reservoir would start getting good inflow again from Saturday.

The reservoir was opened on Tuesday for samba cultivation in the delta.

The water is likely to reach the Grand Anaicut on Friday and from there water will be released on Saturday so that it reaches all canals before the Adi Perukku on August 3.

Storage on Friday

The storage at the reservoir on Friday was 57.5 tmc (thousand million cubic) ft as against its capacity of 93.4 tmcft.
