Inter-club championship: four records set on opening day

WAY TO GO! Tintu Luka, who broke the women’s 800m meet record, gets some words of advice from her coach P.T. Usha.

KOCHI: Tintu Luka has been living in a lonely world the last few years. There is none to push her in the one-lap and two-lap races in her home State.

On Friday, the 20-year-old from the Usha School of Athletics was on her own once again as she shattered the women’s 800m meet record in the seventh M.K. Joseph Memorial Kerala State inter-club athletics championship at the Maharaja’s Stadium here.

Her time, 2:04.8 secs, was her personal best, her previous best of 2:04.96 coming at the Open National last year.

Silver medallist Jomy Jose was 18 seconds behind her.

“Tintu is now ready to run in 2:02. It would have even come here today had there been somebody to push her,” said her coach P.T. Usha.

Three other meet records were set today, the opening day of the three-day championship. T. Eswaran (men’s discus), I. Muahmmed Ijas (under-18 boys’ discus) and C. Arya (under-18 girls’ 300m) accounted for the other marks.

V. Joseph Thomas, Patron, Kerala State Athletics Association, inaugurated the championship. Baby Mathew, president of the State association, presided over the opening function.
