Some of the titles on display at the two-week book fair which began in Kozhikode on Saturday. The name Edward W. Said is usually associated with Orientalism, issues concerning Palestine, culture and imperialism and subaltern studies. So, ‘Music at the Limits,’ a collection of essays on music by Mr. Said should come as a surprise even for his ardent admirers at the Penguin Book Fair, which began in Kozhikode on Saturday. Mr. Said’s work offers a fresh perspective on well-known pieces of music and it celebrates neglected works. The title along with a wide range of Penguin paperbacks and hardbacks are on display at the two-week fair, organised by DC Books. The fair has an interesting collection of titles on a wide variety of topics at a discounted price. The Penguin Black classic series comprises low price edition of celebrated writers such as Charles Dickens, Henrik Ibsen, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Bernard Shaw, Alexandre Dumas and Valmiki. For children, apart from Harry Potter series, there is a fine collection of retold versions of classics such as Three Musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo, Dracula and Jungle Book. These illustrated, hardbound versions are a major attraction for kids. Works by leading Indian writers in English such as Shashi Tharoor, Kiran Desai, Anita Nair, Arundhati Roy, Amitav Ghosh and Vikram Seth are available. “Some titles like Tharoor’s ‘The Elephant, the Tiger and the Cellphone’ and Kiran Desai’s ‘The Inheritance of Loss’ are much in demand,” said the organisers. Works of celebrated writers like Orhan Pamuk, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Milan Kundera too have many takers, they added. Jabir Mushthari
