Free healthcare for children under Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya

Students’ benefit: A child being examined at a free health check-up camp organised under the Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya programme in Belgaum on Saturday.

Belgaum: Deputy Commissioner G. Ravishankar called upon parents to take advantage of the State Government’s Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya programme which is aimed at providing free medical treatment to children.

Inaugurating a free health check-up camp under the programme for children studying from Class 1 to 10 here on Saturday, he said treatment for diseases would be offered free of charge under the programme. Therefore parents as well as members of the School Development Monitoring Committees should ensure that the children who were screened in the health check-up camp and who need medication get it.

The camp was organised jointly by the zilla panchayat, Departments of Public Instruction, and Department of Health and Family Welfare.

According to Child Health Officer R.R. Dhanwadkar, there were 8.40 lakh children and more than 27,000 teachers in 4,619 schools in the district. As many 369 medical teams have been formed involving 275 doctors and 1,167 staff under an action plan. There were 145 children suffering with serious heart ailments and need surgical intervention.
