FACE-TO-FACE: Collector M. Jayaraman, left, verifying ration cards at Krishnankoil Street in Palayamkottai on Saturday. TIRUNELVELI: The month-long massive exercise of door-to-door verification of family cards to weed out fake ration cards began in the district on Saturday. After the officials detected several lakhs of fake ration cards in use across the State, it was decided to conduct total field verification first at Tiruchi and Coimbatore on Saturdays and Sundays to discard the fake cards as a pilot project and extend it to other districts subsequently. As the field verification started here on Saturday, Collector M. Jayaraman also joined a team of officials in validating the family cards at Palayamkottai. The Collector appealed to the public to provide all necessary information to the visiting officials so that it would help them remove the bogus ration cards. When similar verification was conducted last year, the officials found that significant number of families had migrated to other areas and even to other towns owing to various reasons. And most of these migrant families had not mentioned the present address in the family card, forcing the cardholders to apply afresh for distribution of essential commodities by the ration shop in their new area. To avoid this problem, all cardholders have been advised to register their present address in the ration shop concerned. If the address mentioned in the ration card and the present address are same, then the cardholder need not register their address in the ration shop and instead, they should inform the ration shop personnel that they were living in the same address. In case of shifting of residence, the cardholder or any one of the members of the family should inform the ration shop personnel about the migration and register their new address when they come to the ration shop for buying the essential commodity. In case of any doubts or problems during the field verification of the ration cards or information about fake ration cards, the cardholder may contact the following officials: Tahsildars: Tirunelveli 2333169 or 94450 00671; Palayamkottai 2500086 or 94450 00669; Sankarankovil 222270 or 94450 00670; Tenkasi 222262 or 94450 00675; Shencottai 233376 or 94450 00676; Sivagiri 250223 or 94450 00679; Veerakeralamputhur 277140 or 94450 00677; Alangulam 270899 or 94450 00678; Ambasamudram 250348 or 94450 00672; Nanguneri 250123 or 94450 00673; and Radhapuram 254122 or 94450 00674.
