Staff Reporter

THENI: A special police wing seized 83 bags of rice, each bag weighing 50 kg, meant for public distribution, from two godowns in Chinnamanur and neighbouring areas on Saturday. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

In the first raid, 48 bags of rice were seized from a godown owned by Karuppaiah on Muthalamman Temple Street in Chinnamanur. Godown accountant R. Mariappan was arrested.

In another raid, they seized 35 bags of rice and arrested Kannan in another rice godown at Karunkattankulam. They were in search of the gowdown owner Baskaran.

The police also found names and mobile numbers of some officials in the mobile phones seized from the accused.

“Stern action will be initiated against persons engaging in rice smuggling to neighbouring States. Vehicle check up would be intensified in different parts of the district,” said V. Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police.
