KOZHIKODE: K.V. Baburaj of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was unanimously elected chairman of the standing committee on Public Works of the City Corporation on Saturday. Janata Dal (Secular) member P. Kishenchand, who was issued a whip by State president N.M. Joseph of the Deve Gowda faction of the JD(S), did not take part in the election to the post held at the chamber of the Mayor. The election was necessitated following the resignation of Mr. Kishenchand last week. Two other councillors, Zakaria P. Hussain (Congress) and Sherly Pramod (Nationalist Congress Party) of the total eight members were also absent. Last week, District CCollector P.B. Salim announced that a no-confidence motion would be taken up on August 1 after six councillors of the committee served notice seeking Mr. Kishenchand’s removal. Ms. Pramod was one of the members who had sought his removal. Mr. Kishenchand quit after the Collector announced the election. C.V. Gireesh Kumar, V.M. Girija, K.V. Baburaj and V.M. Mohammed of the CPI-M and Shobana Thattari of NCP were present at the election on Saturday. The Janata Dal (S) has four councillors, including Thomas Mathew, Hansa Jayant and Padiyeri Gopalakrishnan in the city council.
