VIJAYAWADA: Bharatiya Janata Party State president Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday demanded that the government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of drought and the steps to be taken to help resolve the problems of farmers. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Dattatreya criticised the government for not coming out with an alternative agricultural plan despite the fact that the prolonged dry weather across the State had caused derailment of season’s cultivation that led to farmers’ agitations. Migration of people was being reported from Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and other districts unforeseen in the past six years. He wanted urgent steps to be taken to mitigate the suffering of farmers and assess the damage suffered by farmers in worst-hit districts. The BJP leader demanded that the government announce a package to provide seed free of cost and also make available loans to the farmers. He lamented that the farmers in rural areas were also hit due to lack of proper supply of power. Mr. Dattatreya expressed concern over the hiccups being experienced by students in the web counselling for admissions into engineering courses based on the EAMCET ranks, and wanted the government to dispel the fears of parents and students that there was nothing amiss with the process. “Similar fears were expressed at the time of using electronic voting machines. Web counselling is also a technology thing. There should not be any doubts in this regard, as it is concerning the future of young people,” he observed. Membership driveMr. Dattatreya said that the membership enrolment drive of the party was taken up all over the State from Saturday and it would last up to August 15, followed by the verification of the same till August 30. Between September 3 and 15, booth and mandal level committees would be formed, followed by district committee elections in October. Towards the end of October, elections would be held to the post of the BJP State president.
