Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has constituted five technical teams under an inspection committee to examine 17 newly-erected Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) as directed by the Supreme Court in an order on July 27. The court asked the TNPCB to inspect the CETPs established by the dyeing units affiliated to the Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT) and submit a report by August 13. The order was a sequel to a petition filed by farmers alleging that the dyeing units were still polluting waterbodies in the region.

The inspection committee is expected to compile a report before August 5 after a field-level examination.

Official sources told The Hindu that TNPCB member-secretary R. Ramachandran had been designated as the head and coordinator of the committee and the five teams formed under it would have three technical experts each.

Each of the five teams would be headed by TNPCB joint chief environmental engineers R. Kumar, N. Sundaragopal and T.C. Ethiraj, executive engineer A. Krishnamoorthy and district environmental engineer (Tirupur district) R. Kannan.

TNPCB officials said the teams would carry out inspections over the next few days and ascertain whether the CETPs had primary treatment, reverse osmosis and reject management systems to ensure zero discharge of effluents as directed by the Supreme Court in an earlier order.
