Firstly, the month predominantly focuses Goddesses like Parvathi/S(h)aksthi/Amman and women take the lead role in performing as well as participating in the Pooja. Aadi Velli and Aadi Sevvai are considered auspicious for prayers and worship. The Tamil Month Aadi is a month that has lot of festivals. During the month of Aadi(Jul-Aug) the Sun changes directions. Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays of this month are auspicious.Every Friday is celebrated as "Aadi Velli". The new moon day of this month is celebrated as "Aadi Amavasai".The pooram star of this month is celebrated as "Aadi pooram".The 18th day of this month is celebrated as "Aadi perukku" or "Pathinettam perukku". Since the rains are abundant in this month, the rivers are filled with water. Aadi is a month of Spirituality/Worshiping and Socializing. Come Aadi Tamil Nadu becomes lively buzzing with a lot of activities, you would see illuminated temples with chanting of mantras and devotional songs, people visiting temples and organizing community services, stores offering good deals to draw customers and boost sales, etc. Following are the important functions/days during Aadi month. 1.Aadi Pandigai – It is first day of Aadi and some invite their son in law and treat with good food, new cloth etc. There is also a practice of separating newly married couples during Aadi, this is to avoid births during April/May the hottest months. 2.Aadi Ammavasai – Its a day to remember our forefathers and people who can would take a holy dip at Rameswaram. 3.Aadi Pooram 4.Varalakshmi Nombu/Pooja – Married women participate in this pooja for prosperity and well being of their family members. 5.Aadi Peruku (Padinettam Peiru/peruku) : 18th day of Aadi is celebrated as Aadi Peruku, where people gather at Cauvery river bank and celebrate the over flowing river. Its also a way of thanking God for good monsoon. By way of socializing , people participate in community services by distributing food, Kuzh etc. During Aadi Peruku, villagers throng river beds nearby and share food amongst friends and relatives and spend time together. Secondly, almost all the commercial establishment/stores sport a festive look and attract customers by way offering discount deals to attract more customers in to their stores. Source : internet
