KALPETTA: Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran has said that various departments in Wayanad district are finalising the list of people affected by the recent monsoon-related calamities and financial aid will be given to deserving people within 10 days. Disbursing aid to people who lost their property and crops in the district at a function here on Saturday, Mr. Ratnakaran said the Agriculture Department had made a provision to pay Rs.1.13 crore to those who had lost their crops. In the first phase, 4,538 people would be compensated. The State government would provide Rs.1 lakh each as financial aid to families who had lost their houses. The Cabinet had sanctioned Rs.25 crore to meet the emergency. The Union government’s norms on compensation were unscientific and not feasible to the State. The State government had demanded that the Centre change these. A single set of norms for all the States were unfeasible. The criteria based on irrigated and non-irrigated land were not helpful to Kerala as most farmers in the State depended on the monsoon for cultivation.
