Gujarat Governor-designate Dwivedi passes away

New Delhi: Devendra Nath Dwivedi, a constitutional expert, who was recently appointed Governor of Gujarat, died here on Saturday due to liver problems even before he could take up his assignment.

The 74-year-old Dwivedi was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital here and was to undergo liver transplant, hospital sources said.

Mr. Dwivedi was appointed Governor of Gujarat to succeed Nawal Kishore Sharma, whose five-year-term ended on July 24.

However, he could not take charge due to health problems and Maharashtra Governor S.C. Jamir was given additional charge of the State.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Mr. Dwivedi’s house and placed a wreath on his body. President Pratibha Patil condoled Mr. Dwivedi’s death. A wreath was also placed on behalf of the President.
