Book by Indian professor wins global award

Parul Sharma

Award to be presented in Toronto on Friday

‘The book has research findings of 25 countries’

NEW DELHI: A book edited by an Indian — a former member of the faculty at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad — has won a prestigious international award.

Prof. Jagdeep S. Chhokar along with two others, Felix C. Brodbeck and Robert J. House, has edited “Culture and Leadership across the World: The GLOBE book of in-depth studies of 25 societies”. The book has been chosen for the 2008 Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award which is conferred every year by the International Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association to the author of a book that makes “the most significant contribution to psychology as a global discipline”.

Prof. Chhokar is leaving for Toronto where the award will be presented to the trio at a convention of the American Psychological Association this coming Friday. He will also make presentations there on the major findings of the book.

The book is the second major publication of the Global Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness (GLOBE) programme. “The GLOBE project has covered 62 countries so far studying their societal cultures and organisational cultures. The new book comprises quantitative and qualitative research findings of 25 countries, including India,” said Prof. Chhokar, who has been associated with the GLOBE project for a long time.

“We edited the book with great difficulty as we had to coordinate with authors of individual chapters in 25 countries. Also, several chapters were written in languages other than English, so they had to be translated,” he added.

Prof. Chhokar has had a 22-year-old association with IIM-A where he taught Organisational Behaviour and Cross Cultural Management. He was also the Dean and Director-in-charge of the institution. He has taught in several countries, including Australia, France, Japan and the U.S. He had earlier worked with the Indian Railways as a mechanical engineer and manager for over a decade, and as international marketing manager with a public sector organisation for four years.

His research work has appeared in several international journals.

Prof. Chhokar is also a citizen activist for improving democracy and governance in the country. He is one of the founding members of the Association for Democratic Reforms, an NGO that works towards strengthening democracy by focusing on transparent electoral processes.

He is also a seasoned bird-watcher, a conservationist and a trained lawyer.
