KOTTAYAM: The formal inauguration of the housing loan waiver for weaker sections introduced by the Revenue Department, will be held here on Monday. Speaking to media persons, the District Collector P. Venugopal said the total loan waiver coming under the programme amounts to Rs.180 crore. This include the Rs.117 crore in arrears from the 12 schemes implemented through the housing board in 1996 and the Rs.31 crore in arrears in projects implemented through the district collectors. In addition the outstanding arrears of Rs.23 crore in the form of financial assistance for medical assistance, assistance to destitute. Housing loans extended to the weaker sections through development authorities which have since been defunct will also come under the loan waiver scheme, Mr. Venugopal said. The scheme would help 41,500 families to regain their right over their properties as the documents would be returned as part of the scheme. In addition outstanding arrears from weaker sections who had availed various loan schemes from the Housing Board from 1977 to 1997 would also be written off, he said. Mr. Venugopal said 5,175 families in the district will benefit from the loan waiver scheme. The amount involved in theses cases would come to Rs.6.50 crore.
