Facelift: Renovations under way in the Aadumalleshwar Zoo and Children’s Park in Chitradurga on Saturday. Chitradurga: Changes are being introduced in the Aadumalleshwar Zoo and Children’s Park in Chitradurga city in order to attract more visitors and become self-sufficient, Forest Department officials said here on Saturday. Speaking to The Hindu, District Forest Officer Srinivasalu said that the department wished to convert the zoo into a bird park to make the zoo more cost-efficient. Currently the zoo houses leopards, bears, blackbuck, crocodiles, panthers, porcupines and star tortoises. “Recently, we brought several birds such as gold pheasant, silver pheasant, lovebirds, etc. We are planning to bring ducks, swans, emus and others species,” Mr. Srinivasalu said. He said that the department had already replaced defunct cages and repaired damaged ones. Proper ventilation is also being provided, he said. “We have put barricades to ensure that people, mainly children, do not go too close to the animals. A garden and walkway are under construction,” he said. He said that for the convenience of visitors, a canteen, benches and play sets for children had been introduced. The renovation had already begun attracting more visitors and the monthly revenue had increased from around Rs. 15,000 to over Rs. 30,000, he said. The zoo had earlier been receiving funds from the Government, but it was not enough. Now with changes, the zoo hopes to be self-sufficient, he added. Transport facilities to the zoo were also being looked into, Mr. Srinivasalu said.
