CHENNAI: Over 500 staff of Chennai Corporation on Saturday cleaned and whitewashed the walls of flyovers, bridges and subways as the civic body’s ban on wall posters and graffiti on such facilities came into force.

Mayor M. Subramanian, who inspected the work of removal of posters from the piers of the flyover on G.N. Chetty Road, said that the civic body had convened a meeting of the agencies involved in pasting posters and requested them not to deface these facilities.

He said that major bridges, including Kodambakkam bridge, Dr. Ambedkar bridge, Binny bridge, Monroe bridge and Napier bridge, were cleared of posters and whitewashed. “Most times when posters are pasted, they cover up the name of the bridge, the foundation stone and even its unique features. Also, posters and graffiti spoil the look of tiles and features,” Mr. Subramanian said.

For cleaning and whitewashing the facilities, around Rs.6 lakh would be spent. On the ramps of flyovers, where there are walls, instead of portraits and paintings, catchy colour combinations would be painted. This is being done so that the paintings do not divert the attention of drivers but also offer some relief from the plain ivory colour. Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, Chief Engineer Murugesan, Leader of Opposition in the Corporation Council Saidai P. Ravi and Zone Chairman K. Elumalai were present on the occasion.
