ALAPPUZHA: Excise officials on Friday seized a lorry at Cherthala that was carrying 4,200 litres of illicit spirit, allegedly from Karnataka to Attingal. The driver and cleaner of the vehicle were taken into custody. According to Excise officials, the lorry, bearing a Karnataka registration number, was intercepted on the National Highway-47, near Thuravoor, during a routine check on Friday night. The spirit was found concealed in 120 plastic cans of 35-litre capacity. The cans were hidden beneath a load of egg trays. The driver, Chandran, 40, of Kalpetta, and cleaner, Suresh, 23, of Palakkad, reportedly told the officials that they were given charge of the lorry at Wayanad with instructions to take the contraband to Kozhikode. The destination was changed to Thrissur and finally Attingal.
