2 killed as lorry driver loses control

CHENNAI: Two persons were killed and at least six others injured when a speeding lorry lost control and ran onto a pedestrian platform on Walltax Road here early on Saturday.

According to police sources, the sand-laden lorry swerved to the left to avoid hitting an autorickshaw and entered the platform. The vehicle ran over J. Ambika (38), a flower vendor, and her daughter J. Renuka (19), who were sleeping. They were killed on the spot.

The lorry knocked down six persons one after the other before coming to a screeching halt.

S. Vijay Kumar (38), T. Sandip Kumar (38), P. Madan Lal (24), A. Kakkan Ram (28) of Walltax Road, J. Seenivasan (30) of Pulianthope and P. Ilango (28) of Kondithoppu were injured and referred to the Government General Hospital. Lorry driver S. Murugan (25) of Vyasarpadi was arrested. The bodies were shifted to the Government General Hospital for post-mortem.

The incident took place in front of the railway parcel office. The Elephant Gate Traffic Investigation police have registered a case.
